tiramisu

Tiramisu is the best. It's super easy to make, it tastes fantastic, and looks pretty impressive. Tiramisu is kind of a staple in my family, especially as a go-to dessert during the holidays. My mom and I made this a few days ago for Christmas dinner. I followed the Cooks Illustrated recipe pretty closely -- the only change I made was to add raspberries. Just add a layer on top of the mascarpone cream mixture half way through the layering process. I also used some raspberries to decorate the top.

Tiramisu, via Cooks Illustrated

2 1/2
cups
strong black coffee , room temperature

1 1/2
tablespoons
instant espresso powder

9
tablespoons
dark rum

6
large egg yolks

2/3
cup
sugar

1/4 teaspoon table salt
1 1/2
pounds
mascarpone cheese

3/4
cup
heavy cream (cold)

14
ounces
ladyfingers (42 to 60, depending on size)

3 1/2
tablespoons
cocoa , preferably Dutch-processed

1 1/2 small baskets fresh raspberries

1. Stir coffee, espresso, and 5 tablespoons rum in wide bowl or baking dish until espresso dissolves; set aside

2. In bowl of standing mixer fitted with whisk attachment, beat yolks at low speed until just combined. Add sugar and salt and beat at medium-high speed until pale yellow, 1 1/2 to 2 minutes, scraping down bowl with rubber spatula once or twice. Add remaining 4 tablespoons rum and beat at medium speed until just combined, 20 to 30 seconds; scrape bowl. Add mascarpone and beat at medium speed until no lumps remain, 30 to 45 seconds, scraping down bowl once or twice. Transfer mixture to large bowl and set aside.

3. In now-empty mixer bowl (no need to clean bowl), beat cream at medium speed until frothy, 1 to 1 1/2 minutes. Increase speed to high and continue to beat until cream holds stiff peaks, 1 to 1 1/2 minutes longer. Using rubber spatula, fold one-third of whipped cream into mascarpone mixture to lighten, then gently fold in remaining whipped cream until no white streaks remain. Set mascarpone mixture aside.

4. Working one at a time, drop half of ladyfingers into coffee mixture, roll, remove, and transfer to 13 by 9-inch glass or ceramic baking dish. (Do not submerge ladyfingers in coffee mixture; entire process should take no longer than 2 to 3 seconds for each cookie.) Arrange soaked cookies in single layer in baking dish, breaking or trimming ladyfingers as needed to fit neatly into dish.

5. Spread half of mascarpone mixture over ladyfingers; use rubber spatula to spread mixture to sides and into corners of dish and smooth surface. Place 2 tablespoons cocoa in fine-mesh strainer and dust cocoa over mascarpone.

6. Repeat dipping and arrangement of ladyfingers; spread remaining mascarpone mixture over ladyfingers and dust with remaining 1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa. Wipe edges of dish with dry paper towel. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate 6 to 24 hours. Sprinkle with grated chocolate, if using; cut into pieces and serve chilled.

Also, in case you haven't noticed, I bought myself a macro lens for Christmas/Hanukkah! Note the awesome super close-up photos. I love it so much -- I've wanted one forever. Expect way better food photos from now on...

Theit camera purse, Tulle jacket, Ray-Ban sunglasses.

I'm packing for my little vacation back east today. Why oh why does my suitcase always end up being so jam packed?? I though I planned it out so well...

Oh, and the shop's closed for a couple weeks. Time to decompress.

teal and black sparkle

I'm so behind on Without a thing to Wear. Me, being naive to the holiday madness, thought sales would die down by Saturday. I was wrong.

This is the newest ring I've posted -- it's an updated version of the Black Sparkle ring. The photos truly don't do it justice, as I think it's one of the most gorgeous color combinations I've used. I just like to stare at it sometimes.

My shop (and I) are going on vacation starting the 21st (that's tomorrow!) and I couldn't be more relieved. My brain has turned to jelly and I have bags around my eyes like I've never had before (and that includes finals time back at school). Speaking of which, B and I actually took our first outfit post out and about yesterday and I was slightly horrified by my exhausted appearance. You'll see it soon enough.

day off

Frye Lisa Scallop boot, Hue tights in brown, Jonano Puzzle dress, Splendid cardigan, hannahnaomi jewelry.

I actually wore this with one of my favorite jackets but failed to get a photo with it on. And as I was browsing the blog to find a photo of said favorite jacket I realized I've NEVER worn it here. That's just not allowed. Especially as it looks good with pretty much everything... I'll have to bring it out and introduce it to all y'all.

Other than that, I don't really have much to say. Except that I made that blue druzy ring a few days ago and I liked to so much that I'm keeping it. Hah! I love my life. And no, I'm not preggers -- the light in that last photo is just doing all sorts of scary things to my figure.

ps. I went to the post office today with 17 PACKAGES. I feel like I'm Santa's little (half Jewish) helper.

Sweet and Salty Rosemary Cashews

These nuts are so good. Additively good. They're salty, sweet, a bit smokey, and the rosemary is the perfect compliment to all that. I made these last night and half the jar has disappeared already. And I'm definitely making these this holiday season as little take-home gifts.

Basically, the BEST CANDIED NUTS EVER.

*ps. instead of maple syrup I used a mixture of Agave and Maple Syrup (from Trader Joe's), I didn't use any Cayenne, and I only used 1 tsp salt -- just in case you're interested.

And while I was taking these nut photos earlier today, I looked out of my window and saw a bunch of deer making out. Like, hardcore. Tongue and everything.

Ok, maybe they were eating lice off each other... They did look pretty itchy.

in the loop

I have some totally new designs in my Etsy shop and you all are getting the first little sneak preview...

Dark Brown Druzy Agate necklace

These are both really exciting new additions to my shop. The druzy necklace is the first of several druzy pieces I'll be adding the next few weeks. Druzy stones are absolutely gorgeous and I absolutely loving this horizontal pendant configuration. I think it lays so nicely when it's being worn. And it's fairly large, which makes it more of a statement necklace, although the colors are totally neutral, so it would make a great everyday piece as well. Love versatility!

Ancient Faux Ivory ring

And I'm really excited about this ring as well. All these beads are made by Selena Wells in Oakland, CA -- which means this entire ring is crafted from scratch here in Oaktown. I love that there are so many artists living here! It makes collaborations like this super easy.

She crafts each individual ring out of polymer clay so each bead is slightly unique in shape and pattern. I have a few more pieces of hers that I'll be incorporating in jewelry very soon!

I'm also totally loving this double banded ring design -- it's the first I've ever done but I absolutely adore the look of it. It's visually light, but it definitely adds some more emphasis to the size and (contrasting) shape of the bead/bezel setting. I totally made it on a whim -- but it just felt right, if you know what I mean...

my 3 favorite things

I was really hoping to photograph an outfit for you guys, but I'm not sure you're into super uncreative, haggard looking outfit posts. I might be wrong, but that's what I assumed. So instead of photos of my tired, slightly airhead-y face, I'm presenting you with three things that are making me really happy right now.

These are the 3 things that make me smile and momentarily forget how many dozens of orders I need to finish by like... yesterday.

This glass bouquet (in my favorite vase) B made me. It's the first thing I see every morning and the last thing I see before I go to sleep. It's SO GORGEOUS and it makes me really, truly happy inside.

... look what I found!! My lovely Barbaros in a different color! I scoured the internet long and hard before I found these puppies on Ebay. For a fraction of the price, I might add. I (unfortunately) had to whoop about 10 other people in order to snag these babies, but it was worth it. It always is. I have to admit that there about 1/2 a size too small, but I'm working it out.

I adore the hardcore studs and the fab buckles on the heel. And of course, the wooden heel is dyed blue/black = so lovely.

My trusty Willow bag from Valhalla Brooklyn. It's perfectly sized for a laptop (which is what I got it for), but I've been using it as my primary bag for the past few days and it's surprisingly perfect. I love the rectangular shape and the stiff (yet crinkly) leather. Her work is absolutely amazing. The other bag (the Larch) I have by her is generally my go-to carry-all purse and equally (perhaps even more??) fab.

Ok, obviously I can't count. But this one is pretty awesome, so I'm adding a fourth item to the list. I'm slightly obsessed with this funky prism that I recently hung in my window. I'm not sure if you guys know about these hanging prisms, but they're possibly the coolest thing ever. Just saying. When the sun hits it directly the prism casts dozens of tiny little rainbows all over the room. And if you move the prism a bit the little rainbows start spinning around. It's amazing. And a bit trippy.

All I'm saying is GET ONE. And hang it in a super sunny place. You'll feel like you're in some sort of magical rainbow land.

the holiday rush

Oh my gosh talk about overwhelming...! This is my first holiday season running the hannahnaomi line and I'm up to my ears in to-do's. It's all really really exciting, but really overwhelming at the same time. I keep having to tell my self to slow down and do one thing at a time. My brother left almost 3 days ago and I've been literally glued to my chair pumping out orders since then. To all my customers -- I really appreciate your patience! My production time is down to about 5 days (phew).

Thank you all for your lovely messages and sweet feedback -- it really means the world. Having such lovely customers makes all the hard work totally worth it! I hope you all have a great holiday season!

kt tunstall -- beauty of uncertainty

I have so much new material on hand that I can hardly wait to show you all some new creations! I just received some gorgeous hand-crafted beads by this lovely artist. Selena made some amazing cabochons for me (which I hope to set in some bezel setting very soon). I think the matte, almost ancient-looking beads will pop against a bright silver setting... So excited!
